GARAGE DOOR SENSOR FAILURE TAKES TWO LIVES

When it happened to Angel in 2014, they thought that it could never happen again. The Caledonia family assumed it was a fluke, a freak accident that saw their beloved family pet caught beneath the concrete driveway and the automatic garage door, an accident which ultimately crushed the cat to death. “Just a bad thing that happened and we didn’t expect it would happen again,” Carol Caledonia told local reporters at the time. In their town of 350 residents, even a cat’s untimely death could make headlines. Angel’s death fueled the local news cycle for weeks, as think pieces on the safety of automatic garage doors proliferated.

Now the Caledonias are making headlines again, because yet another family cat has succumbed to the garage door of their home, meeting its death because the garage door sensors failed to sense the cat slinking low along the ground. “You don’t think about it. You push a button and you don’t expect that pushing a button is going to kill your cat,” Carol Caledonia said. Strange though it may seem, the incidents have been traumatic for the family, whose members can’t help but blame themselves for what happened first to Angel and then to Piper, the most recent victim of their automatic garage door. This time around, the family has decided to sharing their story, in the hopes that sharing what happened to them can prevent another family from experiencing a similar loss. After taking pains to educate themselves at the local garage door manufacturer and retailer, the Caledonias say that some real and simple changes could protect your pets.

An expert told the family that the problem was the height of their garage door sensors. Sensors detect motion or obstructions in the path of the garage door, which signal it to stop closing or to reverse its course, preventing injury. These sensors work best when set at 8 inches or lower. The Caledonia’s garage door was likely set too high, and so they weren’t able to save Piper.

Keep Pets Inside

There has been a rising trend that is very disturbing to us. We want to address is and remind you to keep your pets inside. The unfortunate trend is that people are stealing pets more and more frequently. They know that people are incredibly connected to their pets and will generally offer a lot in reward money to get them back no questions asked. They also know that some breeds are very expensive so they will target those breed specifically.

So, what can you do to try and keep your pets safe? The most important thing is to keep your pets inside whenever possible. Don’t let them play around in the garage, this is the easiest place for someone to kidnap them from. If you let your do out in the backyard make sure it is securely fenced, that the dog can’t easily get out, and that no one can easily get in. We know how important your pets are and how much they feel like a part of your family and that is why we feel it is important to remind you that you should do what you can to keep them safe.

If you have to let your dog in the garage please make sure that your garage door is working right and securing properly when it closes so you can ensure your dogs safety.

ARE GARAGE DOOR OPENERS SAFEER FOR SENIORS?

A garage door is a heavy machine. Yet a garage door goes up and down, rising and falling as easily as an opera house curtain. A garage door is heavy, a garage door must be hoisted, a job which relies upon many pulleys and levers, on brute strength. Mechanical strength. In order for a garage door to be raised with such facility, the garage door needs a garage door opener.
Garage door openers are helpful to everyone, but they are especially important to those who have reached the early winters of their lives. For those whose bodies have begun to betray them — a twinge in the hands, an exhausted exhalation at the top of the staircase — a garage door opener is a literal life saver. With every push of the button, a garage door opener keeps a senior citizen safer, healthier, and independent.
There are those who make do. There are senior citizens who daily struggle with their older model garage doors, as vintage and experienced as they themselves are. The struggle is real, but the struggle is unnecessary. There’s a better way. A solution exists. For any child, grandchild, neighbor, or friend who has worried that the garage door is too big a burden for their senior to bear, a garage door opener is the answer, a way to rest easier. No senior citizen should have to struggle to heft the garage door open and closed, up and down, again and again, 2 or 3 times a day. A garage door opener is peace of mind, the missing piece of the puzzle. The payoff is invaluable.
A garage door opener doesn’t cost that much, and any senior will tell you that they practically pay for themselves, as daily struggle is slowly replaced by safety, the ease and efficiency provided by an electronic garage door opener is a comfort that can not be guaranteed otherwise.

ORGANIZING YOUR GARAGE ISN’T AS HARD AS IT SEEMS

You know it’s time to give your garage an overhaul when you can barely pull your car inside it anymore. Cramped with overstuffed moving boxes full of Christmas decorations, bags of used clothes ready for donating, garden tools you hardly use, bicycles with two flat tires, old appliances — garages are veritable graveyards for junk you only need sometimes, and junk you’ll never need again. Of course, garages make wonderful storage spaces — the fact that a garage can often serve double duty as both a parking space and a storage space is why attached garages are one of the features most sought-after by home-buyers. Still, it’s all too common that the clutter overwhelms, making the garage an eye sore, an embarrassment, and a constant headache. Yet many homeowners are left to wonder what they can do about it.
Garage organization is not as insurmountable as it seems. There are some simple steps you can take to get organized, and to ultimately get more from your garage. First, get rid of all the stuff you don’t want, all the stuff you never use, anything that’s broken, and anything you forgot about. Next, determine which items being stored in the garage are things that you use frequently — like cleaning supplies, rain boots, maybe a lawnmower, maybe some rollerblades. Clear a space for those things in a spot where they can be reached easily.
When that’s done, it’s time to envision where the rest of the junk will go. Although you may employ the use of a few stackable containers (great for storing those infrequently used holiday items) the majority of your stuff should be up off the floor. Flexible, functional garage shelving, garage cabinets, pegboards, or overhead storage are all convenient and space-saving solutions. Each will put your stuff within easy reach, so you can actually find and use it.

Tacoma Garage Doors | Time for a garage door upgrade

How old is your garage door? If your door is more than 10 years old it is probably time to think about installing a new one. You might not understand why if the door is working pretty well. The main reason is because this will ensure your safety. Every 5-10 years the top garage door manufacturers make significant changes to the safety features on garage doors and if you haven’t installed a new door in that time you are really missing out on some features that can really keep you safe.

Another big reason to upgrade your door every decade is because most doors start to wear down at this point and you will start to see more and more problems with the door, resulting in a lot of money in garage door repairs. In most cases at this point it will actually cost you less to install a new door than to keep paying for repair after repair.

Tacoma Garage Doors | Clean out that garage for a fresh start to the New Year

At the start of the New Year it is always a good idea to clean out all the old and make room for the new. One of the biggest areas we tend to store old and unused things is the garage. So, this is the perfect opportunity to take the time to clean out that garage and make room for your car or maybe even upgrade the garage into an additional room of the house, like man cave.

There are some great things you can do to keep your garage organized throughout the year. The biggest thing we find that helps is to get storage containers that you can label and stack. We also recommend putting shelves onto the side of the garage to store even more things on! So many options, you can definitely clean out that garage for a fresh start and then keep it that way all year!

Tacoma Garage Doors | What is something I can do for my garage door?

We don’t like to recommend anyone tackle DIY garage door repairs; in fact, we have a strict policy to only recommend people perform one simple task:  You can clean the moving parts around your garage door with a broom, compressed air, and maybe even a towel, but outside of that, you should never attempt DIY garage door services.  Garage door components, especially springs, can be incredibly dangerous, and are responsible to many cases of fatal accidents and disfiguring injuries every year.

Rather than make yourself a statistic, focus on keeping a clean garage and garage door, and leave the big stuff to the pros!

Tacoma Garage Doors | Practical Tips For Secure Garage Doors And Windows

Garage doors are not there only to provide an aesthetic appeal for your home or to segregate the car storage area from your living space. These doors also need to provide ample security to your garage so that you can sleep in peace. A good garage door would make entering and exiting the garage a breeze and help in securing your belongings as well. The security of these doors is often compromised. However, thankfully, we now have many garage doors that come with an electronic emergency level that can help you in getting better security features. However, finding the way in which these levers work is another headache that you must definitely be avoiding. Here are a few simple and practical tips that would help in ensuring that the doors and windows of your garage are properly secured.

• Use smaller remotes- why do you wish to clip a huge remote on your car visor when the burglars already know about it (most of the people use the same clipping formula). If you have to leave the remote back in the car, there is no use of buying it in the first place. Therefore, you must definitely buy a smaller remote that is portable enough to be carried in your pocket. This shall help you in ensuring proper safety at all times. Get rid of the bulky emote right now and get a mini version that comes with a secure pin code as well. Even if the remote is lost, its access would be locked without the pin.
• Disable the emergency lever- it may sound strange but the burglars mostly know how to use coat hangers to open garage doors (they do so on many occasions). Therefore, disable the emergency feature and you could be able to make sure that you get saved from such issues. You can use some secondary security options instead of an emergency lever.
• Zip-tie the lever- okay, so you might not feel that good about permanent disabling the emergency release lever. Don’t worry and simply zip tie this lever. This technique would help you in keeping the thieves at bay while still being able to pull the lever in the case of a real emergency.
• Block the view- why on earth do you have to risk your property by exposing it to thieves? Simply block the view. If they know what is inside your garage, they would likely come to get it and maybe even look for a chance to sneak a peek in the house.

Tacoma Garage Doors | What is a Garage door tune up?

Just like a car needs a tune-up every now and then, so does a garage door. A garage door is a very complex mechanical system that does require routine maintenance in order to prolong its lifespan.

Garage Door Tuneup

Garage doors can have a DYI tune-up that is very easy to perform. At least once a month, you should visually inspect the garage door springs, rollers, cables, and hinges for signs of rust, fraying, and excessive wear and damage. Frayed or broken cables suggest you need major repairs.

Putting a small amount of spray lubricant like WD-40 to the door hinges, rollers and tracks will keep your door rolling along smoothly and trouble free. Often the garage door opener needs some TLC, too. If you have a chain-drive opener you can apply some lubricant to the full length of the chain as well.

Also, if you have a wooden door make sure it’s painted both on the inside and outside. This will help protect the wood from sun damage. If there are any cracks or gaps in the door, seal them with some caulk. Don’t forget to check weather-stripping sealant at the bottom of the door. If it appears to be cracked, it needs to be replaced to keep the cold weather from seeping in.

Annual maintenance performed on a garage door can help prevent more expensive problems from happening later on.

By doing a couple of simple check-ups a few times a year, you will greatly increase the life of your garage door.  Be your own garage door doctor today!!
